How to use .NET framework sources in VS 2005

Posted on January 22, 2008. Filed under: Debugging |

I don’t have VS 2008 and need .NET framework sources in VS 2005. Here is how we solve this issue:

Simply use WinDbg (6.8.0004.5) to download private symbols.

First attach it to a process which you think uses these .NET DLLs.
and set the path:
>.sympath SRV*C:\SYMBOLS*http://referencesource.microsoft.com/symbols
Turn on noisy mode
> !sym noisy
Now reload each dll.
> .reload /f System.Xml.dll
or if a native version is loaded, use
> .reload /f System.Xml.ni.dll
This will load the private symbols from the server and cache it locally. Just do this once for all DLLs and you are on your way.
Use this path C:\SYMBOLS in your VS2005.
